FILIPINO JAZZ ARTISTS FEATURE | ROGUE MAGAZINE (MANILA, PHILIPPINES)
MAY 2009
I've been featured as one of fifteen Filipino jazz artists in a pictorial in ROGUE MAGAZINE, a publication from the Philippines.
"The latest from pianist Victor Noriega features his "Trio + 2." On FENCELESS(Ponyboy Records), Noriega demonstrates his growing fleetness at the keyboard as well as his expanding compositional and improvisational imagination and skill. A rising presence on the local scene - late last year he impressed greatly at the Earshot festival with the radiant Paul Rucker Quartet - Noriega is both a masterful leader and sympathetic sideman. On Fenceless, the seven tunes are all by him. In moods ranging through effusive, quizzical, and thoughtful, he and his trio mates - bassist Willie Blair and drummer Eric Eagle - join with the "+2" of Jay Thomas on trumpet, flugelhorn, and soprano sax and Mark Taylor on alto sax, to great effect. An earmark of all five performers is their equal attention to soloing and comping. The rhythm section is solid in support, and the soloists are assured."
